Refugees in the UK are almost three times more likely to be unemployed than people born here. We believe that’s wrong. And it’s why Breaking Barriers exists.

Refugees don’t just reach the UK with hopes of safety. They bring skills, experience, knowledge and talent. Yet they face many challenges to finding work.

Some stem from having to flee to an unfamiliar country. Language barriers. Lack of UK work experience. Overseas qualifications not being recognised.

Others are avoidable but far too common. Gaps on CVs due to lengthy asylum processes. Poor hiring practices. Public misconceptions. Discrimination.

With your support, we can help refugees overcome these barriers. Step by step.

Breaking Barriers is a specialist refugee employment charity. Our team provides one-to-one advice, guidance and training for refugees.

We also work with partners and employers. To provide education, UK experience and employment opportunities. And to promote inclusive hiring practices and workplaces.

Our vision is that every refugee can access meaningful work. And we know that, for refugees, employment means far more than just a pay packet.

For refugees, meaningful work can restore a sense of identity, purpose and belonging. It can help people who’ve lost everything to connect with their new communities. It can help them start to heal.

And, at the same time, employers can welcome talented new colleagues with skills, experience and potential for innovation that can impact us all for the better.

If you believe in an inclusive society. In the power of people over prejudice. In the opportunities of the future over the misfortune of the past. Please help refugees find meaningful work and build new lives.

Help refugees build new lives.

Refugees flee war, persecution or violence. They leave behind homes, families, livelihoods. Often they face the barriers to starting again alone.

For a refugee, it takes resilience, determination, and strength to find work in the UK. It also takes time. And the right support.

Your donation will help provide one-to-one advice, training, education and workplace opportunities, to help refugees in the UK find meaningful employment and build a new life.

Oleksii's story

When Oleksii fled the war in Ukraine, he was forced to leave his legal career behind. Thanks to Breaking Barriers supporters, he's now on his way to qualifying as a solicitor in the UK.

"When I arrived in the UK, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to work in litigation again... Now, it feels not only possible – it feels real. I am genuinely grateful for the support and encouragement I have received on this incredible journey."
